When you walk into Indie Kids on West Jefferson Street, you’ll immediately be greeted by Owner and Vice President of Operations, Michelle Brancaccio. She will strike up a conversation with you like you’ve known her for years. In her own words, “I don’t care who you are, when you walk thought that door, I’m your best friend”. She’ll make you feel welcome and you’ll immediately feel her energy and passion for her business.
Being a mom, her children were her inspiration for opening Indie Kids. When shopping for her own children, Michelle noticed that trendy and unique children’s clothing was difficult to come by in Syracuse, specifically boys clothing. She was looking for unique items that you can’t find at Target or Gap, offbeat trends such as bowties, suspenders and newsboy caps. Michelle decided to take this as an opportunity to bring these fashion forward looks to Syracuse by opening her own kids clothing shop. Indie Kids opened its doors in March 2014. They carry stylish clothing and accessories for boys and girls. Band tees, blazers, knee socks, ostrich feather vests and even vintage inspired tricycles complete with working lights (arriving soon!). You’re bound to find something special when you step into this shop. Items are available at various price points. You’ll also find a collection of gently used and vintage clothing.
What’s unique about Indie Kids?
Indie Kids carries items that are exclusive to their store. Michelle has worked with a local screen printer to design shirts you can’t buy anywhere else. You may have seen the ‘Made in Syracuse’ or the ‘United States of Syracuse’ shirts on hip little humans around town. This summer, Michelle worked with local artist, Tommy Lincoln, to create their latest shirt. A play on “I heart Syracuse”, the design features a coney, salt potato and SYR. If this doesn’t scream ‘Syracuse’ I don’t know what does.
Michelle is always determined to stay ahead of the trends (such as the swimmable mermaid tails they carried last summer, now readily available at many retailers). She is constantly researching new trends and products that she wants to bring to Syracuse.
Sales and Promotions
You can catch sales at various times of the year, especially during the months of February/March and June/July.
What does the future hold for Indie Kids?
Michelle is very passionate about what she does and is always looking to grow her business. Since many of her regular customers have grown in age and size, some of them have outgrown the sizes that she carries. Because of this, she would love to carry clothing for older children. Currently Indie Kids carries newborn-size 10, and some adult t-shirts. Michelle would also like to carry a wider selection of accessories and fun/quirky items, such as headbands and blankie tails (currently in stock).
Whether you live in Syracuse, or are just visiting, popping into Indie Kids is a must. They are located @ 264 1/2 W. Jefferson Street (across from the MOST Museum)
